Why High Cholesterol Isn’t Just About Diet—It’s About Stress, Too

When most people think of high cholesterol, they immediately think of greasy food, bacon, or ice cream. While diet certainly plays a role, there’s a major factor that often gets overlooked—stress.
That’s right. Chronic stress—whether physical, emotional, or chemical—can actually cause your cholesterol to rise, even if you’re eating clean and exercising regularly.

Cholesterol isn’t “bad.” In fact, it’s essential. Your body uses cholesterol to build hormones, especially cortisol, your main stress hormone. When you’re under pressure—whether from a tight deadline, lack of sleep, chronic pain, or even inflammation—your body sees that as a threat.
To deal with that threat, your adrenal glands produce cortisol. And to make that cortisol? Your body needs cholesterol.

That means during times of stress, your liver starts pumping out more cholesterol to support this demand—even if your diet hasn’t changed.

Stress Also Slows Cholesterol ClearanceCortisol does more than increase cholesterol production. It can also impair your body’s ability to remove LDL ("bad") cholesterol from your bloodstream. At the same time, stress increases systemic inflammation, which makes cholesterol more likely to stick to blood vessel walls.

So, even if you're eating all the right things, your cholesterol can climb just from living in a high-stress state.

What Kinds of Stress Raise Cholesterol?
  • Not all stress looks the same. Here are some common hidden drivers:
  • Emotional stress (work, relationships, finances)
  • Physical stress (pain, injuries, poor posture, sitting all day)
  • Chemical stress (toxins, blood sugar swings, medications)
  • Sleep deprivation (a major player that spikes cortisol)
  • Chronic inflammation (including gut issues, hidden infections)

So it’s not just about what you eat—it’s about what your body’s going through.
What You Can Do About ItAt Dr. Ryan Tichauer Chiropractic and Wellness, we focus on reducing stress from all directions—not just through adjustments, but through posture correction, muscle release, exercise rehab, and even lifestyle coaching.

Here are a few steps you can take right now:
  • Move often: Sitting too long is a major stressor on your spine and nervous system.
  • Stretch daily: Try our neck stretches for headaches or our 5-minute low back pain routine.
  • Breathe deeply: Diaphragmatic breathing lowers cortisol—every time.
  • Get adjusted: Chiropractic care can help reset your nervous system and lower physical stress.
  • Prioritize sleep: Even one bad night can raise cortisol and disturb cholesterol levels.

If your cholesterol is creeping up and your diet looks solid, it’s time to consider stress as the missing piece. Your body is doing its best to protect you—but it needs help.
Whether you're in Midtown, the Upper East Side, or anywhere in NYC, we're here to help your body rebalance, reset, and recover.
Book your appointment today at Dr. Ryan Tichauer Chiropractic and Wellness. Let’s uncover the real reasons behind your stress—and your cholesterol.
